Description
Drover's Toll and Tower House is a building dating from around 1800, located on Throughgate in Dunscore. It features an east-facing row arranged in a roughly symmetrical layout, consisting of a single-storey, three-bay cottage flanked by narrow two-storey houses. The two-storey houses have prominently advanced and bowed single bay fronts and have been altered over time. To the north, there is an earlier 19th-century two-storey, three-bay house designed by R J Cessford.
All the buildings are constructed from rubble and are whitewashed, with painted ashlar margins. The main roof of the cottage extends over a modern shallow porch, while porches for the flanking houses are located in the re-entrant angles, with the southern porch set diagonally and altered, and the northern porch featuring a forestair. The bowed fronts have 19th-century tripartite windows inserted, with upper windows breaking through the eaves and featuring fish-scale-slated piended dormer heads. The northern bow has a raised basement with an additional door. The three-bay house has a central door and includes a veterinary surgery in a lean-to at the north gable. The windows are sash style, and there are corniced stacks with slate roofs.
