Description
The building is a small, single-storey hearse house constructed of red sandstone ashlar and whinstone rubble, situated on a sloping site at the junction of two roads. The west gable is sandstone and features a tall, double-leaf boarded door. The east gable has a short coped chimney stack, a sandstone skew and rybats. The north wall is blank, while the south wall has a small window towards its east end. The east gable has lost a skew on its north side; a seat at the head likely supported a ball finial. A low, decaying rubble retaining wall is present to the west.
Hearse houses were traditionally a feature of parish provision, predominantly found in lowland Scotland, often located adjacent to parish churches. This is a rare and largely unaltered example of a hearse house that is separated from its original church, which contributes to its group value and warrants a listing.
