Description
Castlebank is a farmhouse comprising two adjoining ranges with piend roofs. The front (south) range was built in the early to mid-19th century, while the rear (north) range likely dates to the 18th century, though it was raised in height during the 19th century.
The south range is constructed from red ashlar with defined margins. Its south elevation features a central Roman Doric-columned porch, sheltering a panelled and glazed door with a fanlight above. The windows are sash windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern. A continuous band runs along the eaves and under the lintels, topped with a cornice that returns around the corners of the building. Chimneys flank the ends of the range, featuring diamond-shaped flues. The rear (north) range is of painted rubble construction with red ashlar margins, and includes a low, lean-to addition to the north. Late 19th-century window openings have long and short-worked margins. Both ranges are roofed with slate. A steading is not included in the listing. Castlebank shares characteristics with Pennershaughs.
