Description
Clatteringshaws Dam, part of the Galloway Hydroelectric Power Scheme, was designed by James Williamson with consulting engineers Sir Alexander Gibb and Merz and McLellan between 1932 and 1934. This long, curved concrete gravity dam features a single control tower at its center and a roadway supported by a continuous arcade of arches above the spillway. The roadway has a concrete parapet, and large piers flanking the control tower act as buttresses for the downstream face. The control tower spans a walkway and has chamfered upper corners, with a plain metal covering over the doorway, which was added in 2009. There is also an additional small tower made of reinforced concrete at the base of the dam on the east side.
