Description
The Auchencloy Monument is a granite pyramid built in 1835 as a memorial to the Covenanters Robert Furgusson, Robert MacMichael, John Grier, and John Stuart, who were killed in 1684. It stands approximately 25 feet high and forms a prominent feature in the landscape. The monument's construction commemorates the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these men; MacMichael murdered a curate at Carsphairn Church in 1684, and the subsequent escapees were tracked down at Auchencloy by Graham of Claverhouse and killed. The Covenanters’ experiences had a significant impact on religion and politics in 17th-century Scotland.
