Description
Murray's Monument is an obelisk monument built in 1835. It is made of rusticated granite and features a truncated apex, a corniced pedestal, and a chamfered base. On the south face of the pedestal, there is a polished granite panel inscribed with details about Alexander Murray, who was the Minister of Urr from 1806 to 1813 and a Professor of Oriental Languages at the University of Edinburgh from 1812 to 1813. The inscription notes that he was born at Dunkitterick on 22 October 1775 and died in Edinburgh on 15 April 1813, and it mentions that he was raised as a shepherd boy on the nearby hillsides. The monument was erected by his countrymen in 1835, largely due to the efforts and skill of James Stewart, Esq of Cairnsmore, on whose property the monument stands.
