Description
The Tomb of Andrew Heron, located at Bargaly House, dates from 1729. It is a triangular tomb with stepped sides and is slightly submerged. The exterior is rendered, with ashlar steps leading up to it. At the center of the ridge, there is an urn, and to the east and west, there are clover-leaf type crosses.
On the east gable, there is a red sandstone panel at the base that features armorial bearings, the initials "ED" and "AH", and is dated "1730". Above this, another sandstone panel is inscribed with "Andrew Rintoul CBE of Bargaly House 1908-1984". An engraved skull is positioned above this panel, and a small sandstone panel at the apex reads "We dy hopeing and our ashes receive life 1730". Steps descend on each side of the tomb.
The west gable has a panel on the left that states, "This tomb was erected in 1729 by Andrew Heron of Bargaly and repaired by John MacKie of Bargaly in 1829. In this tomb Andrew Heron of Bargaly was buried in 1730 and Elizabeth Dunbar his wife in 1729. Restored in 1929 by Leiut Col John Mackie DSO of Bargaly and Herbrand XL Duke of Bedford KG then tenant of Bargaly". There is a replica of the large 1730 panel on the right and a replica of the small 1730 panel at the apex.
The tomb is enclosed by modern iron railing.
