Description

Opened 1848 by the Caledonian Railway. Long station block

with crow-stepped gables and wallhead dormer heads.

Roughly symmetrical in lay-out with 2-storey centre and

single storey flanking wings. Stone-cleaned whin rubble and

contrasting red ashlar dressings, prominent end and axial

stacks. Tall range has 3-bay platform (E) elevation with

wide gable right, 2 asymmetrical full-height gabled wings

extend W; contains main thoroughfare, waiting area with

cast-iron bolection-moulded chimneypiece. Long single storey

N wing divided into 3 crow-stepped ranges, that nearest N

with full-length louvred and slated ridge ventilator.
