Description

The building is a single-storey former railway station, constructed in 1859 and enlarged in 1906 by the Caledonian Railway. It has a U-shaped plan with later infill and wings. The station is built of stugged and snecked rubble sandstone with tooled ashlar dressings, and has a grey slate roof. The architectural style is characterised by 4-panelled doors, 12-pane timber sash and case windows, deep eaves with exposed rafter and purlin ends, and ashlar ridge stacks.

The east elevation features a pentice-roofed timber infill in the centre, flanked by a gable to the left with a block-pedimented projecting window, and a gable to the right with a 12-pane window. There are later additions to the far left, flush with the gable and containing a door and window, and a slightly recessed addition to the far right with a door and two windows. A decorative cast-iron drinking fountain is fixed to the wall on the right, and two 4-light rooflights are present. The west elevation consists of a 5-bay domestic block to the left, with a door in the second bay from the right, and a later single bay with a window recessed to the right.

The interior is in a dilapidated condition but retains some original boarding and chimneypieces.

Located nearby is a signal box, built in 1906 by the Caledonian Railway Company, to Type S4. This red brick structure has a piended slate roof. It has timber mullioned multi-light glazing to the first floor, a deep cill shelf with metal brackets, and deep eaves with boarded soffits and brackets fixed to mullion heads. The front elevation features two segmental-headed multi-pane windows on the ground floor and a 9-light window to the signal cabin. A door provides access to both the ground and first floors on the return side, reached by a timber forestair. Other windows include a 4-light window and a 5-light window to the left return. The rear features an outshot and stack rising through the eaves. Interior alterations have created an office space, and some timber panelling and fireplace remains are present.

A red brick wash house with a slate roof and stack is found in the northeast corner of the main building, featuring two windows and a roof vent, along with a boiler and two ceramic sinks.

To the east of the main building is a single-storey outbuilding constructed of stugged and snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and a slate roof that echoes the main building's detailing. Deep eaves with exposed rafter ends and cut-back purlin ends are present on the gables, along with two boarded doors to the front and a 12-lying-pane window to the left return. Ashlar stacks rise through the eaves at the northwest corner. The interior has not been inspected.

Finally, a large rectangular goods shed, situated north of the main building, has a masonry base course, horizontally-boarded walls, and a piended slate roof with deep eaves. It features two large sliding doors on the south elevation, and single sliding doors originally opening to railway sidings on the end elevations. Remains of a platform are visible to the west, and the interior is unexamined.
