Description

The Archaeology and Geography Department at the University of Edinburgh, located at 12 Infirmary Street, is a former school built in 1777 by Alexander Laing, with an early 19th century addition to the east and further work completed in 1905 by Sir Rowand Anderson. This symmetrical, two-storey, eleven-bay Classical building features a large two-storey extension to the east, which was formerly a university department and is now used as offices since 2015. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, with coursed sandstone at the rear. It has a base course, a band course, and a moulded cornice, with the outer two-bay sections slightly advanced. A central single-storey tetrastyle Doric portico is a prominent feature, along with a five-stage square-plan tower at the rear, which has an ogee roof and squared and snecked stonework on the upper two storeys, accented by contrasting ashlar margins.

The entrance elevation to the west predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with grey slates in a piended style. The interior has been largely altered for office and conference use.
