Description

75 and 76 Dalkeith Road is a former stable lodge, coach house, and stables built around 1880. This two-storey building features a long U-plan design in the Scottish Baronial style, constructed from stugged squared and snecked cream sandstone, accented with polished dressings. It has a dividing band course and an eaves course, with crowstepped gables that include beaked skewputts and both long and short quoins.

The stable lodge includes a two-stage entrance tower set back in a re-entrant angle on the outer left, topped with a conical roof and a lead ball finial. The west (principal) elevation has rollmoulded architraves around the lodge openings, featuring a timber panelled door and a corbel table above with a single window at the second stage. To the right, there is an advanced gabled bay with a piended slate roof and a three-light canted window on the ground floor, along with a bipartite window above, which has a blank square panel in the gablehead.

Adjoining the lodge, the former coach house and stables range includes two carriage arches with non-traditional glazing, a central gable bay, and an advanced bay on the outer right, featuring a large opening with non-traditional glazing to the right of centre.

The building has predominantly four-pane and two-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, shouldered and coped gablehead stacks, and cast iron rainwater goods.

The interior was last seen in 2015 and underwent alterations around 1990 to create residential accommodation, offices, and a utility room. Some original features from circa 1880 remain in the stable lodge, including the plan form, fire surrounds, simple cornices, and panelled timber doors.

Surrounding the property, there is a low coped boundary wall to the north and both low and high boundary walls along Dalkeith Road, which include capped gatepiers and pedestrian gateways.
