Description

79 Dalkeith Road is a classical house built around 1830, featuring two stories and an attic, with a symmetrical three-bay design and attached wing walls to the north and south. The structure is made of coursed rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings, and the wing walls are also constructed from coursed rubble. The house has a base course, a dividing band course, a cornice, and a blocking course. The boundary walls to Dalkeith Road are proposed to be excluded from the listing.

The principal elevation on the west side has a panelled, two-leaf timber door with a plate glass fanlight above, framed by a decorative painted timber doorpiece with pilasters and a cornice. There are tripartite windows on either side of the door at ground level, with the side lights of the left window being blind. Above, there are single windows on the first floor. A single-storey lean-to is located on the north gable and the east (rear) elevation.

The house features predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with some 16-pane windows. It has a grey slate piended roof with coped and corniced wallhead stacks and moulded clay cans.

The interior, which was last seen in 2015, has been moderately altered due to its previous use as a day nursery. It still retains early 19th century cornicing in the principal rooms, along with cast iron fireplace inserts with marble surrounds, timber panelled doors, and window shutters. A dog-leg stone staircase provides access to the first floor.

The south side has a tall coped rubble wing wall with a pedestrian gate, and a similar wing wall is attached to the north.
