53 Woodhall Road, Edinburgh

This building at 53 Woodhall Road in Edinburgh is a semi-detached villa designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1907, with construction carried out by Robert R Grieve in the same year. It is a single storey and attic structure featuring a rectangular plan with four bays. The northern facade has a central M-gable and recessed porches under a swept roof on the outer bays, while the side elevations have jerkin-headed gables. At the rear, there is a scullery outshot located centrally.

The exterior is finished with white painted harl. The northern entrance features timber boarded doors in the recessed porches, with flanking casements on the outer bays. The ground floor has quadripartite windows at the centre of the gables, and above these are segmental-arched tripartite windows, with blind slits at the gable apices. The southern elevation was not visible in 2002, but Dean of Guild plans indicate that it includes tripartite piended-roof dormers for each house and timber boarded doors leading to a piend-roofed central scullery outshot.

The windows feature 6-pane glazing in timber casements. The villa has a large central ridge stack and smaller end stacks, all rendered with ashlar copes and topped with red clay cans. The roof is covered with graded grey slate.

The property is enclosed by a low coped rubbled boundary wall, with a cast-iron gate and railings specifically for number 53.
