Description
34 Woodhall Road in Edinburgh is a building dating from around 1815, with additions made by Alexander Lorne Campbell in 1926. It is a two-storey structure that originally served as a rectangular cottage, featuring very deep bargeboarded eaves at the center. The 1926 addition includes a jerkin-headed section with a swept porch and verandah on the west side, along with a single-storey service wing to the east that has a courtyard.
The original building is constructed of random rubble with rusticated, polished ashlar quoins, while the addition features rake-jointed long and short rubble quoins. Some windows have raised margins, and the fenestration is irregular.
On the west elevation, the entrance features an advanced jerkin-headed gable to the left, which has two large windows on the ground floor and a jettied first floor with a tripartite casement. The original cottage is recessed to the right, showcasing a large window at the ground level. There is a large porch in the re-entrant angle, which has a swept roof supported by stone piers, a timber panelled front door with upper lights, and a small window to the left of the door. Above the porch, there is a flat-roofed dormer with a casement window.
The south elevation, facing the road, displays the wide gable of the original cottage on the left with two windows on the first floor. To the outer right, there is a smaller gable featuring a small timber-boarded door to the attic. A flat-coped random rubble wall in the center creates an open courtyard, with a timber boarded gate set into the wall.
The east elevation shows the single-storey service wing, which has two windows and a wall-head stack. The north elevation features the wide gable of the original cottage in the center with two windows on the first floor. The left return has three ground floor windows and a later attic window that breaks the eaves. The service wing is recessed to the outer left and has three windows. An advanced two-bay verandah on the outer right has a bell-cast swept roof supported by stone piers, although the two windows in the verandah have been filled in. Above the verandah, there is a large wall-head stack.
The building predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, with 8-pane glazing in the service wing and some casements on the upper floor of the addition. The bargeboards are plain, and the stacks are coped with yellow clay cans. The roof is covered with graded grey slate.
The boundary wall is made of flat-coped random rubble and includes a timber studded gate in a curved recess, along with later two-leaf gates by the service wing.
