6 Bonaly Steading, Edinburgh

6 Bonaly Steading in Edinburgh is a mid-19th century building that was converted by McTaggart and Mickel in 1985. It was originally a two-storey, six-bay cartshed and granary, and it has been transformed into flats and garages. The building features a gabled roof to the north and a cross-gable to the south. On the east side, there are four lintelled cartshed openings, while the west side has a forward-facing gable with three arched slit windows on the first floor. The exterior is made of squared, coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar window margins.

The east elevation has two modern doors at ground level to the left, with four cart entrances to the right. There are small windows on the first floor, with a larger window in the center. The north side has a blind gable. The west elevation features a forward-facing gable on the outer right, with a former door that has been converted into a window at ground level, complete with a bracketed canopy. Above this, there are three arched slit windows, and small windows across the rest of the elevation on the first floor. The south side displays irregular fenestration.

The building predominantly has non-traditional tilt-windows, although some larger openings feature timber sash and case windows. The roof is finished with ashlar-coped skews and shaped skewputts, covered in graded grey slate with red ridge tiles.

Additionally, there is a single ashlar-coped gatepier located to the north.
