Description
11 Kinellan Road is a villa in Murrayfield, Edinburgh, built in 1867 with alterations and additions made by Robert Lorimer in 1912. The building is two stories tall with an asymmetrical gabled design, featuring two bays to the east from 1867 and two bays to the west, which extend to form an L-plan at the rear from 1912. It is constructed of squared and snecked bull-faced sandstone, with bracketed eaves and stone skews with kneelered skewputts on the gables.
On the southeast elevation, the entrance is located in a recessed bay with rock-faced long and short quoins on the outer right. It has a timber-boarded door and a blank heraldic panel with the date 1867 above it. There is a slightly advanced gabled bay in the center topped with a weathervane, featuring a piend-roofed two-storey canted window. The other three bays have gable-headed windows that break the eaves.
The west elevation has an advanced gabled bay on the right with a diagonally-set chimney stalk, a canted bay with a shaped parapet at ground level, and a modern window above. The second gabled bay from the left has a modern conservatory adjoining it.
The north (rear) elevation shows the gable end of the west extension on the right, with a modern flat-roofed garage at ground level in the center. There is a round-arched window for the stair on the left.
Inside, there is a timber-panelled vestibule and a timber handrail with turned balusters leading to the stair. The dining and drawing rooms feature timber panelling and marble chimneypieces.
To the west of the house, there is a summerhouse, a three-sided rubble building with a mono-pitch roof made of slates specified by Lorimer as 'old Forfarshire slates'. It has two windows with small leaded panes.
The original 1867 block has 4-pane glazing, while the Lorimer addition features small-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, along with piend-roofed dormers in the attic. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are corniced apex, wallhead, and ridge stacks.
