Description
Eskhill is a 3-storey, 5-bay villa with a 2-storey, 2-bay wing, dating from after 1771, likely with late 18th century additions and further alterations by Robert Lorimer in 1907-1908. The villa is faced in ochre-painted harling with painted ashlar dressings, an eaves course, and a moulded cornice; hoodmoulds are present on the south elevation, likely from the later 18th century.
The south elevation features a consoled, pedimented doorway with a panelled door and a small-pane fanlight. Windows are set in slightly recessed panels, with smaller windows at the centre bay on the first and second floors. To the left of the main entrance is a stone mullioned, later bipartite window, and two first-floor windows above the doorway.
The north elevation has a rectangular, flat-roofed stairblock projecting at the centre, with a single-storey flat-roofed addition in the re-entrant angle to the left. A timber, cantilevered 5-light oriel window is present at the first floor to the outer left, possibly designed by Lorimer, along with a door below. Further additions extend to the outer right.
On the east elevation, a canted, piend-roofed cantilevered oriel is located at the centre of the first floor, also likely by Lorimer, with a door and two windows below. Small-pane glazing is used in the sash and case windows. The roof is grey slate, piended, with corniced and ashlar-dressed stacks.
Inside, a late 18th century, cantilevered stone staircase winds through the house. The hall is tiled in marble, and features a classical chimneypiece with an inserted tablet. A first-floor chimneypiece, dating from circa 1760 and originally from Fordell House in Fife (demolished), has been incorporated, along with another from South Audley House in Mayfair, possibly placed by Lorimer. Decorative plaster cornices and panelled dadoes are also present.
A dovecote, dating from circa 1700, was restored and converted as a summerhouse by Robert Lorimer in 1907-1908. It abuts the garden wall to the northeast of the house, and is 2-storeys high, with gabled ends, a stone forestair, pebbledash render, stone crowsteps, and doorways in the south gable at each floor. There are two windows to the east at ground level, and a row of small-pane casement windows at the first floor, and a north end stack. A bolection moulded stone chimneypiece is on the first floor.
A wellhead, also by Robert Lorimer in 1907-1908, is constructed from sandstone rubble with an ashlar coping and a simple wrought-iron overthrow with a winch; the opening is protected by a wrought-iron grille. It is situated to the north of the house.
Corniced ashlar gatepiers with ball finials mark the west drive, alongside boarded timber gates. Decorative wrought-iron railings and a gate are located by the south elevation. Rubble and brick retaining walls are also present within the grounds.
