Description

32 India Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and basement tenement building designed by William and Lewis A Wallace between 1819 and 1823. It is constructed from polished sandstone ashlar, featuring polished V-jointed rustication on the principal floor and broached ashlar at the basement. The building has a former cill course at the first floor, with windows that have been extended down, and a cill course at the second floor. There is a band course at the principal and first floors, along with a cornice and blocking course at the second floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.

On the east (principal) elevation, there is a round-arched doorpiece in the left bay at the principal floor, which includes a recessed flush-panelled door with a radial fanlight. The centre and right bays contain windows, with regular fenestration on the floors above and a blind window centered at the second floor. The first floor has cast-iron balconies in the bays, with architraved windows that have cornices. The basement area is flagged and has coped rubble retaining walls, along with a vertically boarded timber door leading to the cellar.

The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, with cills lowered at the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape. The building also features cast-iron rainwater goods and a random rubble gablehead stack with broached ashlar dressings, topped with circular cans and a coped skew.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The property is complemented by ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials. There is also a cast-iron lamp mounted on the railings, featuring a glass globe.
