Description
20 and 22 India Street in Edinburgh is a classical tenement building designed by William and Lewis A Wallace between 1819 and 1823. This four-storey and basement structure features a nine-bay facade made of tooled sandstone ashlar, with channelled polished ashlar on the principal floor. Notable architectural elements include a cill course at the first and second floors, a band course at the principal and first floors, a cornice at the second floor, and a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance is accentuated by ashlar steps and entrance platts that extend over the basement.
On the principal elevation, there are recessed doorpieces, including a common stair door at the center and doors located in the third bays from both the outer left and right. These doors are flush-panelled and topped with rectangular fanlights. The principal floor features windows set in recesses, while the upper floors have regular fenestration with architraved windows and cornices at the first floor. The basement area is flagged and has coped rubble retaining walls, with predominantly vertically boarded timber doors leading to the cellars.
The building primarily has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge stacks are harled with broached ashlar dressings, and there are large rubble gablehead stacks also with broached ashlar dressings, all coped and fitted with circular cans. The skews are coped as well.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is enhanced by ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials. Additionally, there are cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings with glass globes.
