Description
18 India Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and basement tenement building designed by William and Lewis A Wallace between 1819 and 1823. It features a three-bay facade set in a terraced site, constructed from polished sandstone ashlar. The principal floor showcases polished V-jointed rustication, while the basement is finished with broached ashlar. The building includes a former cill course at the first floor, a cill course at the second floor, a band course at the principal and first floors, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts extend over the basement.
The east (principal) elevation has a round-arched doorpiece in the left bay, featuring a flush-panelled door with a radial fanlight. To the right, there are windows with regular fenestration on the upper floors, where the cills are lowered at the first floor. A decorative cast-iron balcony spans the first-floor bays. The flagged basement area has a coped rubble retaining wall and vertically boarded timber doors leading to the cellars.
The principal and second floors are fitted with 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the first floor has 15-pane timber sash and case windows, with cills lowered at the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape, and the building features cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and urn finials. There is a cast-iron lamp mounted on the railings with a glass globe.
