Description

26, 28, and 30 India Street in Edinburgh is a classical tenement building designed by William and Lewis A Wallace between 1819 and 1823, with restoration completed in 1982. This four-storey and basement structure features nine bays and is constructed from tooled sandstone ashlar, with channelled polished ashlar on the principal floor. It has a cill course at the first and second floors, a band course at the principal and first floors, a cornice at the second floor, and a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance is marked by ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

The principal elevation includes recessed doorways, featuring a common stair door at the center and doors in the third bays from both the left and right. These doors are flush-panelled and have rectangular fanlights above them. The principal floor has windows set in recesses, while the upper floors display regular fenestration, with architraved windows and cornices at the first floor. The third floor has cast-iron window guards on all windows except for the central bay. The basement area is flagged and has coped rubble retaining walls, with predominantly vertically boarded timber doors leading to the cellars.

The building features predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate M-roof. It includes cast-iron rainwater goods, random rubble ridge stacks with broached ashlar dressings, and a random rubble gablehead stack also with broached ashlar dressings, topped with circular cans. The skews are coped.

The interiors were not seen as of 1997. The property is enhanced by ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials. Additionally, there are cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings with glass globes.
