Description
34 India Street is a three-storey and basement tenement building constructed between 1819 and 1823 by William and Lewis A Wallace. It is situated in a terraced site and features polished sandstone ashlar with polished V-jointed rustication at the principal floor and broached ashlar at the basement. The building has a former cill course at the first floor, with windows that have been extended down, a cill course at the second floor, a band course at the principal and first floors, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.
The principal elevation features a round-arched doorpiece located in the left bay at the principal floor, which includes a recessed flush-panelled door with a radial fanlight. The centre and right bays contain windows, with regular fenestration on the floors above and a blind window centered at the second floor. There are cast-iron window guards in the bays at the first floor, and the basement area is flagged with coped rubble retaining walls.
The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, with cills lowered at the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. The gablehead stack is made of rubble and harled, topped with circular cans, and features a coped skew.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The property also includes ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have fleur-de-lis balusters and quasi-Maltese cross finials. Additionally, there is a cast-iron lamp mounted on the railings with a glass globe.
