Description
36 India Street is a three-storey and basement tenement building located in Edinburgh, designed by William and Lewis A Wallace between 1819 and 1823. It features a ten-bay façade constructed from polished sandstone ashlar, with polished V-jointed rustication at the principal floor and broached ashlar at the basement. The building has a band course at the principal and first floors, a cill course at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and entrance platts that overhang the basement.
The principal elevation includes round-arched doorways in the third bay from the left and the third, fourth, and fifth bays from the right, featuring recessed flush-panelled doors with umbrella, decorative, and plate glass fanlights. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows, with regular fenestration on the upper floors. There are cast-iron window guards in the bays at the first floor, and the basement area is flagged with coped rubble retaining walls, leading to predominantly vertically boarded timber doors to the cellars.
The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with plate glass on the principal and first floors of Nos 36 and 42. It has a grey slate M-roof, cast-iron rainwater goods, and harled ridge stacks topped with circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lis balusters and quasi-Maltese cross finials. Additionally, there is a cast-iron railing-mounted lamp with a glass globe.
