Description

5, 7, 9 India Street is an early 19th-century tenement designed by William and Lewis A Wallace. This four-storey and basement building features a ten-bay façade constructed from broached sandstone ashlar, which is channelled at the principal floor. It has a cill course at the first and second floors, a continual cornice over the second floor, and band courses between the principal floor and basement, as well as between the first floor and principal floor. The building is topped with a blocking course and has ashlar steps and entrance platts that overhang the basement.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a flush-panelled common stair door located to the left of the centre, flanked by windows. There are also flush-panelled doors in the third bays from both the outer left and right, each with rectangular fanlights above. The principal floor features windows set in recessed rectangular panels, while the floors above have regular fenestration with architraves and cornices at the first floor. The third floor windows have cast-iron window guards, except for the fifth bay from the left. The basement area is flagged and includes vertically boarded timber doors leading to the cellars, with coped rubble retaining walls.

The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. It also has rendered ridge stacks and a broached ashlar gablehead stack, which is coped with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property features ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials. Additionally, there are cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings with glass globes.
