Description
11, 13, 15 India Street is a symmetrical tenement building from the early 19th century, designed by William and Lewis A Wallace. It stands four storeys high with a basement and features seven bays on a terraced site. The exterior is constructed of broached sandstone ashlar, with polished V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. There are cill courses on the first and third floors, along with a blocking course. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platforms that extend over the basement.
On the west elevation, the central entrance features a flush-panelled common stair door, flanked by additional flush-panelled doors with radial semicircular fanlights. These are further surrounded by windows in the outer bays. The upper floors have regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged, with coped rubble retaining walls and vertically boarded timber doors leading to the cellars.
The northeast elevation, which faces Jamaica Street West, is made of broached rubble and has windows at the second and third floors. The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The gablehead stack is harled and topped with coped circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials, along with cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings that have glass globes.
