16 India Street, Edinburgh

16 India Street is a three-storey and basement tenement building located in Edinburgh, designed by William and Lewis Wallace between 1819 and 1823. It features a polished sandstone ashlar façade with polished V-jointed rustication at the principal floor and rock-faced rustication at the basement. The building has a cill course at the first and second floors, a band course at the principal and first floors, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the principal elevation, there is a round-arched doorpiece on the left, which consists of a flush-panelled door topped with a plate glass fanlight. The windows on the right side follow a regular pattern on the upper floors. The basement area is flagged and features coped rubble retaining walls, with vertically boarded timber doors leading to the cellars.

The principal floor has plate glass windows, while the upper floors are fitted with 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M-shape, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. The gablehead stacks are made of rubble with broached ashlar dressings and are topped with circular cans. The skews are coped.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings that feature spear-headed balusters and urn railings.
