Belford Bridge, Belford Road

Belford Bridge, built between 1885 and 1887 by Blyth and Cunningham Engineers, is a partially castellated bridge featuring Scots Baronial detailing. It has a large semicircular single span arch over the Water of Leith, with additional subsidiary blind arches on either side. The bridge is constructed of coursed random rubble, with some ashlar dressings on the subsidiary blind arches. The main arch displays various moulded and dentilled courses and is flanked by slightly advanced crenellated piers. There is a banded string course above the advanced piers, which features a double row of mock machiolation, and a carved relief panel above that bears the City of Edinburgh coat of arms. The bridge is topped with a crenellated parapet that has later copes over the central arch, along with a band course and further mock machiolation.
