Description

18-20 George Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey building with a double attic, designed in the French Renaissance style by W Hamilton Beattie in 1879. It was remodelled internally and extended at the rear by Robert Hurd and Partners in 1978. The building is constructed from cream sandstone ashlar and features a projecting ground floor with panelled pilasters and a consoled cornice.

On the right side, there is a three-bay shopfront that includes a segmental-pedimented door with decorative console brackets and two-leaf bronze doors set in elaborately moulded architraves. To the left, a single bay incorporates the entrance, with plate glass windows. The upper floors feature a canted pilastered window at the centre, with the outer bays slightly advanced and flanked by paired pilasters. Each floor has an entablature, and the centre bay is topped with a pediment.

The first attic storey showcases paired arched windows framed by pilasters and aedicules, mirroring the centre section at the second storey. The first floor has cast-iron mullions and transoms, while the upper floors are fitted with four-pane timber sash and case windows, also with iron mullions. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the building has ashlar coped skews and stone stacks. The interior has been modernised.
