Description
47 Hanover Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey building with a mansard attic, constructed between 1784 and 1790 and later remodeled by David Cousin in 1868. The building features six bays of offices with projecting shops at the ground level, made of droved cream ashlar sandstone with later polished dressings.
The ground floor has five irregular bays adorned with pilasters, a mutuled cornice, and a pierced balustrade. It includes three plate glass shopfronts, each with its own entrance. The shopfront to the right is flanked by a pair of deeply chamfered round-arched doorways topped with wrought-iron screens. The first and second floor windows are framed with later bracketed architraves, corniced on the first floor. A cornice and parapet above contain six segmental-headed wallhead dormers with acroteria, and all architraves feature incised decoration.
The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The building has ashlar coped skews, rendered stacks, and a roof covered with grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1995.
