Description
54 and 56 Hanover Street in Edinburgh is a classical corner tenement building dating from around 1775, with alterations made by architect David Bryce in 1860. The structure features three storeys and a basement, with six bays, and part of the ground floor has been converted into shops. It is constructed from droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, and has long and short quoins at the corner. The first-floor windows have later timber architraves.
On the George Street elevation, the building has six bays, with the central two bays featuring a nepus gable. The centre-right bay contains blind windows, and there are two elegant bowed dormers with bipartite windows, hung with slate. The ground floor has two modern shops with polished ashlar fascias and plate glass windows.
The Hanover Street side has a three-bay gable, with a corniced and architraved door to the common stair on the left and a projecting modern shop on the right. This interesting shop has five marble-clad angled fins, each topped with a copper figure, and contrasting angled glass in between. To the left, there is a two-bay wing with earlier 19th-century corniced ashlar facing at the ground floor and open steps leading to a basement shop.
The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass, and the common stair and attic feature 12-pane windows. The building has ashlar coped skews and a parapet facing Hanover Street, along with ashlar apex stacks and grey slate roofing. The interior was not seen in 1995.
