Description
The building at 93 George Street in Edinburgh is a classical office structure originally built around 1780 and reconstructed by Thomas Hamilton in 1833. The shop interior was designed by A W McNaughton in 1900, and the building underwent restoration by Robert Hurd & Partners from 1980 to 1982. It is a four-storey, four-bay structure made of polished cream ashlar sandstone. The rebuilt ashlar shopfront projects at the ground level and features four full-height multi-pane glazed windows, with the rightmost window serving as a door, topped by a dentilled cornice.
On the first floor, there are arched windows supported by slender cast-iron columns that hold up a balcony above. The second floor has architraved windows, with a decorative cast-iron railing surrounding the balcony. The dentilled cornice continues to the fourth or attic storey, which has arcaded windows between piers, along with a cornice and blocking course. The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case with multi-pane glazing. The roof features rebuilt ashlar stacks and is covered with grey slates.
Inside, the building showcases Corinthian detailing, with the front room on the first floor displaying Greek revival elements, including panelled walls and a marble chimneypiece.
