Description
126 Princes Street in Edinburgh is a building designed by W Hamilton Beattie in 1859, possibly incorporating earlier elements. It is a four-storey, broad two-bay shop with offices above, constructed from polished cream sandstone ashlar. The ground floor features a modern shop built over a basement area, while the original strapwork balustrade remains intact. The upper floors include a broad projecting five-light bay with curved ends on the left and a single bay on the right. The windows are adorned with architraves and cornices on the first and second floors, with a console on the right. The building has a modillioned eaves cornice and a simple pierced balustrade.
The interior includes a saloon at the rear with a later gallery to the side. The original staircase to the upper floors is mostly intact, along with the cornices. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, and the roof is covered with grey slates.
