Description
27-29 Cockburn Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic gabled block designed by architects Peddie and Kinnear between 1859 and 1861. The building features a canted oriel window that is corbelled out to the second floor, supported by the head and hands of a bearded figure within a segmentally-arched recess. The exterior is made of squared and snecked stugged sandstone, which is painted at the ground level. There is a continuous cornice above the modern shop on the ground floor. The first-floor windows are set within segmental arches, and there is a moulded string course that steps up over the oriel. The gable includes a small pedimented window and a truncated apex stack. Additionally, there is a chamfered corner at Craig's Close.
The windows are timber sash and case, with two panes in the upper section and four panes in the lower section. A small corniced apex stack is also present.
