Description

18-20 Cockburn Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic tenement building designed by architects Peddie and Kinnear between 1859 and 1861. The ground floor features a shop, while the upper levels include a distinctive circular tower that projects from the first floor at the corner of Craig's Close, leading to a square caphouse with a pavilion roof at the attic. There is also a smaller tower that projects from the second floor on the outer left, which connects to a gabled square at the attic. The building has a crowstepped gable between these towers.

The ground floor is constructed of ashlar, while the upper levels are made of squared and lightly stugged sandstone with polished dressings. A moulded corbel table runs along the first floor, linking to the elevation of the adjacent No 24 on the left. Below the second floor windows, there is a moulded string course that rises over a date panel marked 1860. The ground floor openings have roll-moulded surrounds, with stop-chamfered details above. The first floor features two mullioned bipartite windows, and there is a mullioned bipartite window set in a segmental-arched recess in the gable. The crowstepped gable facing Craig's Close has an apex stack.

The ground floor windows and fanlights are fitted with plate glass, while the upper floors have timber sash and case windows with plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slates.
