Description

St Christopher's Hotel, located at 9, 10, 11 Market Street in Edinburgh, was designed by John Gershom Adams and completed in 1899. This five-storey, eight-bay hotel features Scots Baronial detailing and is constructed from coursed bull-faced sandstone with polished dressings.

The building has a continuous cornice at the ground floor that steps up over a tripartite entrance. There is a string course between the second and third floors, which also steps up over tripartite windows in the center bay. The eaves cornice adds to the architectural detail. Notable features include finialled, slate-roofed tourelles on the outer left and to the left of the center bay, which are corbelled out at the fourth floor. A crenellated oriel is corbelled out at the second floor in the second bay from the right, and there is a projecting wallhead stack with corbel courses between the third and fourth bays from the left. The center gable is crowstepped and topped with a ball finial.

The hotel has bipartite windows in three bays to the left, bipartites in the fourth bay from the left, tripartite windows above the entrance, and single windows to the right with bipartites above the oriel. A modern canopy has been added over the entrance. The ground floor features modern glazing, while the upper floors have plate glass in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the stacks are made of coursed ashlar with circular cans.
