Description
Breakwater at Newhaven Harbour in Edinburgh is an early 19th-century structure featuring an L-plan ashlar pier and a curved concrete breakwater that was added between 1876 and 1878. The breakwater was enlarged and reconstructed from 1876 to 1881, during which a lighthouse was erected on the eastern pier. The eastern wall was widened from 1893 to 1896, and an arcaded timber fish-house was constructed at the same time. Various warehouses were built on the southern quayside on land that was reclaimed for road widening around 1960.
The pier includes a sloping ferry slip from 1812, which has a setted surface with ashlar edging and concrete at the southern end. The sea wall, designed by Grainger & Miller in 1837, was heightened by four courses in 1889 and now serves as a retaining wall for land reclaimed for the fish market.
The north quay is made of high-quality coursed ashlar and features iron rings and replacement railings. It underwent concrete heightening during its complete reconstruction from 1876 to 1881, which also included the addition of a new lighthouse.
The breakwater, originally built in 1864 by Robert Stevenson, is 540 feet long. It was enlarged in 1876 and features a curved and stepped entrance, with a six-foot sea wall added in 1881, although the concrete mix used was inconsistent.
