Description

21, 23, 25 Frederick Street is a classical tenement building constructed between 1786 and 1792, featuring three storeys and an attic with six bays. It is located on a corner site and has projecting shops at the ground level. The exterior is made of droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, and it displays long and short quoins at the corner, along with an eaves cornice.

On the far left, there is an early 20th-century glazed door leading to a common stair, framed by a painted architrave and cornice, with terrazzo-covered steps and a landing. The two inner left bays have a projecting shopfront, while the three right bays feature a fine mid-19th-century projecting shopfront with fluted Composite corner pilasters. The entrance is set back at the centre and topped with a pediment above the fascia and cornice, with acroteria at the corners. There are also a pair of large late 19th-century piend-roofed canted timber dormers that are slightly off-centre.

The gable is constructed of rubble and has later rendered stacks flanking the apex stack. The ground level is rendered with a simple cornice. The building has timber sash and case windows, mostly with six-pane upper sashes and two-pane lower sashes. The skews are ashlar coped, with rendered stacks and grey slate roofing.

Inside, the shop at No. 21, known as Dickson's, features an arcaded design, with the former front wall supported by consoles, and it incorporates the basement. The flats were not visible during the last inspection in 1995.
