Description

43 George Street in Edinburgh is a former house built around 1775, which was refaced and had an extra storey added by Thomas Hamilton in 1829. Further alterations were made in 1872 and by A W MacNaughton in 1897. The building is a 4-storey and attic structure with 3 bays, designed in a classical style and constructed from polished cream sandstone ashlar. The ground floor features a pedimented fluted Corinthian porch on the left and a single porch on the right, both supporting an entablature with a solid parapet. Behind this, there is a 4-bay pilastered arcade that includes a 3-bay shop and an entrance to the upper floors.

On the first floor, there is a broad pedimented canted window flanked by Roman Doric columns, with a tripartite window in the centre. The second-floor windows have a moulded cill course and architraves, topped by a dentilled cornice. The third floor features windows set in square recesses, with an additional cornice and blocking course. The roof has a pair of timber box dormers, with a bipartite dormer on the left and a tripartite dormer on the right.

The elevation facing the lane is a 3-storey structure with a raised basement, built from coursed rubble and featuring 3 bays. The building has plate glass timber sash and case windows, ashlar coped skews, corniced stone stacks, and is covered with grey slates. A very fine wrought-iron lamp bracket is located by the door.

Inside, there is a top-lit saloon at the rear.
