Description

Circa 1775; refaced with extra storey in early 19th century; modern shops at ground. Pair of 4-storey, 3-bay former classical houses built out at ground incorporating basement. Polished cream sandstone ashlar (cleaned to E). 2 shops to W (that at centre, Brian Drumm, fine early 1970s example by Ron MacInver, with lettering intact) and 1 to E flank panelled door (also built out) to upper floors. 1st floor with architraved and corniced windows with Greek detailing and cast-iron anthemion and palmette balconies circa 1820; 2nd floor cill course, cornice above; 3rd floor with further cornice and blocking course.

Timber sash and case windows; plate glass at 1st floor and 3rd floor W, 12-pane otherwise. Ashlar coped skews; corniced ashlar stacks; removed at centre, rendered to E.

INTERIOR: modern shop interiors; that at centre, Brian Drumm, with fine period interior, particularly the array of domed ceiling lights which fill the space.
