Description

37 and 35A George Street in Edinburgh are a pair of former classical houses built around 1775, which were refaced and had an extra storey added in the early 19th century. The ground floor now features modern shops, with two shops on the west side and one on the east side. The central shop, Brian Drumm, is a fine example from the early 1970s designed by Ron MacInver, complete with intact lettering.

The buildings are made of polished cream sandstone ashlar, and they incorporate a basement. The first floor has windows with architraves and cornices, showcasing Greek detailing, and features cast-iron balconies with anthemion and palmette designs from around 1820. The second floor has a cill course and a cornice above, while the third floor includes another cornice and a blocking course.

The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass on the first and third floors of the west side, and 12-pane windows otherwise. The buildings have ashlar coped skews and corniced ashlar stacks, although the central stack has been removed and the east side is rendered.

Inside, the modern shop interiors contrast with the central shop, which retains a fine period interior, particularly notable for its array of domed ceiling lights that illuminate the space.
