Description
25A Thistle Street South West Lane in Edinburgh is a classical terraced building reconstructed between 1830 and 1831, with alterations made at the ground level by John Bryce in 1880 and further changes since then. The structure is four storeys tall with an attic and features a four-bay design, constructed from cream scumble sandstone ashlar. The ground floor has been extended to accommodate two modern shops, which have a largely unified corniced timber front. The entrance to the upper floors is slightly set back to the right.
On the first floor, the windows are adorned with broad architraves and consoled pediments. The second floor features lugged architraves below an initial cornice, while the third floor has an additional cornice and a blocking course. The building is topped with a pair of piend-roofed canted dormers.
The rear elevation, which faces the lane, is two storeys and an attic high, built on a raised basement and has five bays, with a hoist located at the centre.
The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case with plate glass. The roof is finished with grey slates, and the skews are ashlar coped, complemented by rendered stacks.
Inside, both shops have top-lit saloons at the rear. The western shop is accessed through a Corinthian screen and features a coffered barrel-vaulted ceiling, designed by John Bryce.
