Description
5 Upper Bow in Edinburgh is a four-storey and attic tenement building designed by Thomas Moncur in 1882. It features four bays and showcases 17th century Scottish Revival detailing, adapting to the slope of the street. The exterior is constructed of rock-faced squared and snecked sandstone with polished dressings, while the ground floor is painted ashlar. The building has a corniced ground floor and a corbel table at the attic level. Notable architectural elements include long and short quoins, stop-chamfered corners at the ground level, and windows set in tabbed surrounds.
The outer left bay is advanced and contains a glazed door with a plate glass fanlight in the re-entrant angle. To the right, there is a recessed three-bay block with stop-chamfered pilastraded openings for shops at the ground floor, which feature modern glazing. The right side also has bipartite windows and a carved panel displaying initials and a date (188?-worn) between the left and centre bays, topped with a corbelled-out chimney breast that rises to the wallhead gable, flanked by windows. A piend-roofed dormer is located to the right. The building is finished with six-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows and covered with grey slates.
