Description
2 Upper Bow is a five-storey and attic tenement building designed by J Russell Walker between 1884 and 1886. It features three bays and incorporates Scottish 17th century revival detailing, adapting to the slope of the street. The exterior is made of coursed stugged cream sandstone with polished dressings, although the ground level has been painted.
Architectural details include moulded string courses between the first and second floors, as well as between the fourth floor and the attic. There are cill courses at the second and fourth floors, and the windows are set within roll-moulded surrounds. The entrance features a timber panelled door framed by an ogee-arched roll-moulded stop-chamfered surround, adorned with thistle carving in the arch-head and a finialled hoodmould with carved labelstops to the outer left. Above the door, there are paired small windows.
The building includes shops at the centre and right, with two windows on the first floor and a grouping of windows in a 2:1 arrangement above. The dormer heads are shaped with scrolls, and the left dormer features a ball finial and a circular panel in the gable.
The windows are timber sash and case with four-pane glazing. At the wallhead to the outer left, there are chamfered corniced stacks with circular cans, and the ridge stack is located to the right. The roof is covered with grey slates.
