Description

4 Upper Bow is a tenement building located in Edinburgh, designed by J Russell Walker between 1884 and 1886. This four-storey and attic structure features an asymmetrical three-bay layout and incorporates 17th century Scottish revival detailing, stepping with the line of the street. The exterior is constructed from coursed rock-faced sandstone with polished dressings.

The ground floor is corniced, while the first, second, and attic floors have a moulded cill band. There is chequer-set corbelling to the right at the second floor and beneath the centre window on the third floor. The windows have roll-moulded tabbed surrounds, and there is a band of plain panels above the door and the left bay. A panel with a small pediment is positioned over the rounded corner of the outer right at ground level.

The entrance features a timber panelled door within a shoulder-arched surround, topped by a small-pane glazed fanlight. A small segmental pediment is located above the first-floor window in the centre. The building has long and short quoins, and the ground floor curves at the corner with a corbel above.

The dormer heads are shaped and ball-finialled, with a circular panel in the gable over paired windows in the left bay, and a ball-finialled gabletted crow-stepped dormer head with a rectangular panel in the gable over the two right bays. There is also a gunloop to the right.

The upper sashes feature small-pane glazing, while the lower sashes have four panes. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is a corniced L-plan wallhead stack to the outer right with circular cans.
