Description

46 and 46A George Street in Edinburgh is a former classical house dating from around 1775, which underwent alterations at the ground level, including a shop designed by Simpson & Brown in 1984-1985. The building features three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a four-bay façade arranged in a 3-1 pattern. It is constructed from droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, framed by panelled pilaster strips. The first floor has been stone cleaned and includes architraved and corniced windows.

To the left, there is a three-bay shopfront with an inset Ionic columned doorpiece in spectacle order, flanked by multi-pane windows and framed by pilasters and a cornice with ball finials, also designed by Simpson & Brown. To the right, a two-bay mid-19th century shopfront features a consoled cornice, a doorway leading to the shop and upper floors, and a bipartite shop window. The basement contains shops, and there are three late 19th century piend-roofed canted dormers, one of which is larger.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The building has ashlar coped skews, corniced rendered stacks, and is roofed with grey slates. Inside, Trotter's was redesigned by Simpson & Brown. The property also features plain cast-iron railings with replacement lamp standards at No 44, which incorporate Trotter's lantern.
