Description

The lodge and gate piers at Merchiston Castle School, located on Colinton Road in Edinburgh, were designed by Dick Peddie and Walker Todd, with the lodge built in 1928 and the gate piers in 1930.

The lodge is a single-storey structure with a square plan, featuring broad eaves and a swept roof. It is harled with some ashlar dressings, including a base course, eaves course, and rendered banded quoins. The lodge has two slate-hung piend-roofed dormers in the attic. To the right of the three-bay entrance elevation, there is a timber panelled door with lattice glazing set in a moulded surround. To the left, a flat-roofed canted bay is present, along with timber sash and case windows. The roof is pyramidal and slated, topped with a central diamond-set stack.

The gates and gate piers consist of ashlar-coped squared and snecked rock-faced quadrant screen walls. The gate piers are square in plan, corniced, and have panelled ashlar platforms, with later carriage lamps added to the inner piers. Ashlar surrounds frame the pedestrian gateways. The wrought-iron gates provide access for both vehicles and pedestrians, adorned with Greek key borders at the top and bottom, rose motifs at the corners, and a painted and gilded crest of Merchiston Castle School in the center of the vehicular gates.

Additionally, there is a coped random rubble boundary wall surrounding the property.
