Description

Stable Court at Colinton House, located on Colinton Road in Edinburgh, was designed by Richard Crichton and John Fraser between 1802 and 1804, with interior alterations made by Dick Peddie and Walker Todd in 1930. This single-storey, seven-bay stable block forms a square around a courtyard. The exterior features a droved ashlar facade with coursed rubble walls inside, a dressed ashlar base, and an eaves course. The cornice and blocking course are present at the tympanum.

On the northeast elevation, the seven bays include a central segmental-arched pend set within a wide tympanum, which has a cornice and blocking course. There are paired blind windows on either side, with advanced outer bays featuring a recessed segmental arch that contains a central window on the ground floor and a square window above on the sill course. To the left, there is a lean-to store with a later large vehicular opening that has a timber door with glazed panels above. To the right, a lean-to store is now a derelict shell with a central doorway and a former attic access hatch.

The southeast elevation has a plain rubble wall with modern timber stores that conceal the interior. The southwest elevation features a later enclosed red brick wall that replaced the original ashlar wall, providing vehicular access in the center, while a modern timber store partially conceals this elevation.

The northwest elevation mirrors the northeast with seven bays, where the advanced outer bays have a recessed segmental arch that now allows for later vehicular access on the ground floor, with an open window above at the attic level. This elevation also has a wide tympanum with a cornice and blocking course, and five regularly placed blind windows in bays two to six, topped with a plain eaves course.

The original glazing and roofing plan is now lost, but documentation indicates that there were mock 12-pane sash and case windows and a piended grey slate roof, along with ashlar stacks. Inside, the buildings are semi-derelict, with the courtyard currently used for storage and building materials, while the northeast range is also utilized for storage.
