Description

190 and 192 Newhaven Road is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay plain classical house with a single bay, two-storey addition on the right, dating from around 1820. The building was originally symmetrical with a rectangular plan and is constructed from coursed rubble cream sandstone, featuring raised polished margins, raised long and short quoins, and a continuous string course. The central entrance has a columned doorpiece, and there are stugged voussoirs over the arch of the coach house in the outer right bay.

On the west elevation, the central doorway has an original decorative fanlight above it, surrounded by a three-quarter engaged Doric columned doorpiece with a plain frieze and entablature. Each bay on the first floor has a single window, while the ground floor features tripartite windows flanking the doorway. There is a two-leaf timber door leading to the coach house in the outer right bay, which extends through the depth of the house.

The windows are four-pane timber sash and case. The original house and the addition have a piended grey slate roof, with a rendered apex stack on the west and a corniced stone wallhead stack on the east.

Inside, the property retains original fireplaces, doors, cornices, and shutters throughout. The walls have been recently stripped back to plaster, and the stairs at the rear are being restored to their original condition. The ground floor includes the harbour master's office, now a dining room, and the former servants' quarters, which now serve as a kitchen, shower room, and bedroom. The first floor contains a drawing room and additional bedrooms, with an office safe repurposed as a cupboard in the dining room.

The boundary wall along Newhaven Road is a coped rubble wall, with polished ashlar piers flanking the driveway, featuring projecting cornices and square caps. The wall along Dudley Crescent shows clear delineations of brick and stone.
