Description
Ramsay House, located at 184 Newhaven Road in Edinburgh, is a neo-Greek house built around 1831. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure that is set back from the road and is a mirror image of the adjacent No 186. The facade is made of polished ashlar and features architraved openings, an advanced central bay, and recessed ashlar quoins. There is a continuous base and string course, with a blocking course raised at the center. The first-floor windows are corniced, and the central window is pedimented. The entrance features an Ionic doorcase.
On the west elevation, stone steps lead up to the central doorcase, which is flanked by fluted Ionic columns. Above the doorcase is a blank architrave, frieze, and cornice. The door is timber panelled with a replacement plate glass fanlight. The first floor has a pedimented single window with decorative consoles flanking it, while there are single windows in both floors of the outer bays. The first-floor windows have decorative cast-iron guards.
The east elevation, or rear, is constructed of coursed rubble sandstone and has irregularly placed single openings, along with a stone stair leading from the ground floor to the basement. The west elevation features 4-pane timber sash and case windows in all bays, with timber sash and case windows also present at the rear. The roof is piended with grey slate, and there are ashlar wallhead stacks with linked octagonal flues. Flanking the main block at the first floor are single-storey sandstone segmental arches, with the left pend blocked.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
There is a coach house set back from the main house to the southwest, built of random rubble and featuring a hay loft. It mirrors the coach house of adjacent No 186 and has long and short rubble quoins with a single opening in the attic.
The boundary wall along Newhaven Road is made of coped rubble, with ashlar gatepiers flanking the driveway. These gatepiers have projecting cornices and base courses, recessed panels, square caps, and ironwork in place. There are also coped random rubble walls along the northern and southern boundaries, and the property has an extensive garden to the rear.
