Description
Victoria Park House is a large, Classical-style house located in Edinburgh, built in the late 18th century, with significant alterations in the late 19th century. The central block dates to 1789, and the house was extended and reordered during the late 19th century, resulting in an asymmetrical layout.
The house is constructed of polished sandstone on the main elevation, with rusticated long and short ashlar quoins to the ground floor. It features a continuous base, string course, and a cornice blocking course. Flanking the central block are single-bay, two-storey pedimented additions built of coursed rubble sandstone with polished dressings to the window openings. A further two-storey bay extends to the east, and a single-storey bay extends to the west.
The south (entrance) elevation has a tripartite doorpiece flanked by detached Doric columns and engaged corner pilasters, enclosed within a timber porch. The original timber door remains. Above the door is a tripartite window, with flanking openings that are now blinded. A single-storey canted window is located to the right of the centre, and a full-height canted window is located to the left. The symmetrical pedimented wings each feature a single window on the ground floor and a round-arched window above.
The east side elevation exhibits a two-storey, three-bay extension, with a round-arched opening in the central bay at the first floor and a crowstepped gable. The north (rear) elevation is finished in rubble, with rough dressings and long and short quoins. A two-storey bow sits at the centre, with a tripartite window on the ground floor and a single opening above. Single windows are positioned on both floors in the outer left and right bays.
A variety of timber sash and case windows are found on all elevations. The south elevation features three-light canted windows, while the central and right bays on the first floor have 12-pane windows. The rear elevation contains a 12-pane tripartite window at ground level, a two-pane opening to the right, and 12-pane windows to all floors in the remaining bays. The central block is topped with a piended grey slate roof, with a conical cap over the rear bow. Coped wallhead stacks are present, with various square and circular cans.
Inside, a two-leaf timber door is flanked by Doric columns and corner pilasters. A room in the rear bow incorporates an original tripartite window, fluted margins, panelled shutters, a decorative architrave, a foliate frieze, and lion head capitals to half-engaged, fluted columns. A decorative cornice with cast panels, original timber dado panelling, and a marble fireplace are also present in this room. The remaining rooms were not inspected in 1996.
