Description

This is a two-storey, three-bay neo-Greek house, built around 1831. It is located on Newhaven Road, Edinburgh, and is situated set back from the road, acting as a mirror image of number 184. The front facade is polished ashlar, featuring architraved window openings, an advanced central bay, and recessed ashlar quoins. A continuous base and string course runs around the building, with a blocking course raised at the centre. The first-floor windows have cornices, and the central window is accentuated by a pediment.

The west (entrance) elevation is characterised by stone steps leading up to a central doorcase, framed by fluted Ionic columns and a blank architrave, frieze and cornice. A timber panelled door is topped by an original two-pane fanlight. The central bay on the first floor features a pedimented single window flanked by decorative consoles, while the outer bays have single windows on both floors. Decorative cast-iron window guards are present on the first-floor windows.

The rear (east) elevation is constructed of coursed rubble sandstone with irregularly disposed single openings, and includes a stone stair leading to the basement.

The windows on the west elevation are four-pane timber sash and case windows on the first floor, with two-pane timber sash and case windows on the ground floor. The roof is piended and covered in grey slate, with an ashlar wallhead stack to the north and a ridge stack to the south, positioned between the original block and a later addition; the stacks are linked by octagonal flues. Single-storey sandstone arches originally flanked the main block at ground level (although the right-hand pend is now blocked).

Inside, a grand stair is located at the rear, and a separate servants’ stair leads down to the basement quarters, which are now a private flat. A buffet recess is present in the ground floor dining room, alongside a dummy door to the right and a doorway to the kitchen on the left. Original plasterwork remains in many rooms, including petal-shaped ceiling roses in the landing and drawing room, and intact timber dado panels.

A coach house, constructed of random rubble, stands nearby, consisting of a single-storey main block with hayloft and a set-back wing to the right. This design mirrors that of the adjacent property, number 184. Key features include raised and polished margins, droved long and short quoins, and an architraved square opening to the hayloft. A two-leaf timber boarded gate, using original iron hinges, provides access. The main block has a grey slate roof, while the side wing has a piended grey slate roof. A shallow stone "horse bath" is situated in the east corner of the stable court.

A coped rubble boundary wall runs along Newhaven Road, with ashlar gatepiers flanking the driveway. These gatepiers have a projecting base course and cornice, recessed panels, and square caps; the original ironwork is still in place. Coped random rubble walls define the north and south boundaries. A wall to the east separates the stable court from the garden. An extensive garden to the rear contains a rectangular Victorian greenhouse located far to the northwest, abutting the wall to Dudley Crescent, and incorporates a sculpted figurative panel inset into the eastern boundary wall.
